That’s certainly the case with this week’s special guest, the very excellent Lucy Jane (pictured above).
Hailing from Rochdale, though now based in London, the 20-something songstress is that rarest of things: a songwriter who can combine off-beam artiness and soulful carousing in equal measure.
The former art student has a sense of the otherworldly that nods to Cat Power, while her songcraft is straight from the Beth Orton handbook of gentle reminiscence, making for an intoxicating experience both live and on record.
What’s more, she lists Anthea Turner on her MySpace page as one of her key influences, and that can only ever be a good thing.
Lucy Janes plays Adode (Wilbraham Road, Chorlton) on Thursday, July 2. Free.
LIVING up to their name, Manc promoters Blowout have built a reputation on their epic rock ’n’ roll eruptions; yet they’re just as adept at making more soothing musical noises too.
